Hidden menus n’ tricks on Garmin GPS

The manuals aren’t complete and always leave things out of them, in this case it’s a collection hidden menus and easter-eggs that are out of eyesight of many people. Are things that we’ll not apply in the day to day but that we should take in mind: to change the GPS from MTP to massive storage, to check the reception, ect.

The post is based on Nüvi 1300 that I won in the 2010 Xmas instead of 3760T I use normally.

Screen calibration

The title leaves no doubt, is harmless but rarely we would have to use it.

  1. GPS off.
  2. Hold down the upper left corner.
  3. Turn on GPS.

We’ll just have to touch the dot that indicates us in various positions of screen and the calibration will be done.

Satellites reception

Sometimes we need to know that our GPS really receives the signal from the satellites and this will be our screen. It will help us to have a visual of the satellites that our GPS detects, with what intensity and which ones uses to locate us.

  1. GPS on.
  2. Hold down the intensity bar of reception.

Will apear us a screen with the satellites, on gray the discarded ones, on yellow with low signal and on green with good reception and fixed. With fixed I mean that they are the ones that will use to calculate our position and that will have to have a very low signal to discard them in calculation.

Service menu

Will apear us a screen with the satellites, on gray the discarded ones, on yellow with low signal and on green with good reception and fixed. With fixed I mean that they are the ones that will use to calculate our position and that will have to have a very low signal to discard them in calculation.

  1. GPS on.
  2. Hold down the battery icon.

To go to each of the sections just press “Next” until you return to the initial screen with which we started and that is the only one that has the “Exit” button with which to will restart the GPS. Although if we’ll not use the GPS afterwards we can turn it off directly.

Erase user data

This is a factory-reset that will erase all user data: Home location, Favorites and track logs. The rest of things like the maps are kept.

  1. GPS off.
  2. Hold down lower right corner.

Will get a confirmation to erase the user data and if so the GPS will restart losing all settings, obviously is irreversible. So the first thing that will ask us is where we’re as any new GPS would do.

Diagnostic menu

This menu gives us info about shutdown errors, diagnosis mode and other things that we should not touch anything if we don’t know what we play.

  1. GPS on.
  2. Tap on “View Map”.
  3. Press on speedmeter box.
  4. Hold down on compass.

As it’s a very rare menu that only use the nerds of Garmin SAT and developers with numerous tech references.
